Overview

Part of West Yorkshire ICB, Mount Pleasant Medical Practice serves a patient population of just under 16,000 in Batley. The practice piloted Surgery Intellect, powered by TORTUS, to explore how ambient voice technology could support day-to-day consultations and patient experience. Early feedback highlighted improved focus during appointments, time savings and benefits beyond the consulting room.

The challenge

The practice was not responding to a specific operational issue. Instead, the team wanted to pilot an ambient voice technology solution to understand what difference it could make to consultations, clinical workload and the wider practice workflow. As with many practices, any new tool needed to fit naturally into existing systems and support their patients.

The solution

Mount Pleasant Medical Practice introduced Surgery Intellect, powered by TORTUS, during consultations to support clinical documentation. By automating note creation in the background, the tool allowed clinicians to stay focused on patients rather than screens. The practice also identified administrative value for non-clinical staff.

Early results & impact

“Fantastic software – I can now focus more on keeping eye contact with the patient rather than staring at my screen. It really allows a seamless experience with the patient and keeps things personal. The software is a fantastic tool and saves a lot of time.”

Clinicians reported that patients appeared more engaged during consultations, appreciating the increased attention and reduced typing. One clinician noted they were no longer running behind in clinics, describing the tool as something they “cannot live without”.

The medical secretary highlighted clear operational benefits, sharing that Surgery Intellect had made note taking and letter writing much easier. Feedback also identified areas for future development, including support for additional languages to reflect the practice’s patient population.

Looking ahead

With IM1 assurance for file to record for EMIS and SystmOne now available, the practice sees strong potential in continued use of ambient voice technology as integration evolves. Ongoing development around templates and multilingual capability would further strengthen its value for both clinicians and patients.

Summary

This pilot shows how ambient voice technology can enhance the consultation experience even where there is no single problem to fix. By enabling clinicians to focus on patients and supporting wider administrative tasks, Surgery Intellect delivered immediate, practical benefits while highlighting clear opportunities for future development.
